Pastor Barry Schwenk has been serving St. Paul’s as the Senior Pastor since October 2015. Pastor Barry is originally from Indiana, although he did spend several years in Zaire when his parents served as missionaries. Pastor Barry attended the University of Findlay in Ohio and Kansas State University. This formal training led to a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. During this time, Pastor Barry pursued additional theological education and served as a youth minister. After graduation, Pastor Barry moved to Arizona where he met his wife, Colette. Colette was born and raised in Arizona and received degrees in Primary Education and Special Education from Northern Arizona University. After being wed, they moved to Indiana and became very active in their local church by serving as directors of youth ministry. In 2006, with a new baby in tow, the Schwenks moved to Ethiopia where they served as missionaries through the Christian Veterinary Mission. Six years and two more children later, the Schwenks returned to Arizona. In 2012, the entire family joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and began serving in various capacities while continuing to work for their mission organization. In October 2015, Pastor Barry accepted a call by this church to assume the role of senior pastor. Pastor Barry continues his formal theological education through Faith Seminary in Tacoma, Washington. Their family loves animals (including several reptiles that live in their home), board games, soccer, loud music and movies. Their desire is to make St. Paul’s a safe and inviting place for everyone, so that we might grow and mature in Christ together.
